![]() These convictions are troublesome to the state whose concern is, rather than protecting the faith of the Malay-Muslims, to safeguard the interests of the religious and political elites. ![]() This activism may be attributed to their ‘unorthodox’ religious convictions. In spite of the repression faced by them, former Darul Arqam members have continually re-emerged, mainly in the form of successful economic enterprises. ![]() Mahathir’s Premiership, has affected even the religious bureaucracy. While Islamic civilisation has been tolerant of intra-Muslim religious pluralism, the Malaysian state’s treatment of Darul Arqam depicts a jealous desire to monopolise the definition of religious orthodoxy, and further, demonstrates how the aggrandisement of power so characteristic of institutions of the state under Dr. While the author subscribes to the view that the action taken against Darul Arqam was politically rather than religiously motivated, it can be shown that, even on a religious basis, the case against Darul Arqam presented by the Malaysian state was weak, if existent at all. This paper examines religious issues that drove the wedge between the state and Darul Arqam, a leading Islamic movement based in Malaysia, leading to the eventual banning of the latter in 1994.
